About the Program

The West Orange High School Band Program serves students in grades 9 – 12 through a variety of musical experiences. Students participate in concert bands, marching band, jazz ensembles, percussion ensembles, and other performance groups throughout the school year.
Band members perform at football games, concerts, school events, parades, community functions, and music performance assessments. Students also have opportunities to participate in honor bands, solo and ensemble events, and leadership activities within the program.
Through daily rehearsals and performances, students develop instrumental skills, music literacy, ensemble performance techniques, and an appreciation for music. The program provides an environment where students work together toward shared goals while building friendships and creating lasting memories through their musical experiences.
The West Orange High School Band Program is led by the school's band directors Kenneth Boyd, Garth Steger, and Colin Urbina. Together, they help provide students with opportunities to learn, perform, and represent West Orange High School throughout the community and beyond.

Director of Bands - Ken Boyd

​Kenneth Boyd is the current Director of Bands at West Orange High School. Additionally, he has also served as Director of Bands at Olympia High School and Memorial Middle School as well as Associate Director of Bands at University High School. Mr. Boyd graduated from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1998. At West Orange, Mr. Boyd directs the band program and serves as chair of the Performing Arts Department. Bands under Mr. Boyd's direction consistently earn superior ratings at all levels of evaluation. In addition, ensembles under Mr. Boyd's direction have performed at the Stetson Invitational, the Midwest Clinic, the CBDNA/NBA Southern Division Conference, and the President's Concert in conjunction with the annual FMEA Music Education Conference. In 2017 the West Orange Band Program earned the Blue Ribbon Program of Excellence Award, given by the National Band Association. West Orange was one of only three high schools nationwide to receive the award that year.
Mr. Boyd was named the 2017-2018 Teacher of the Year for West Orange High School and a finalist for Orange County Teacher of the Year. In addition, he is a two-time recipient of the Kessler Grand Bohemian Scholarship Award for excellence in fine arts teaching. He has also received the National Band Association's Outstanding Jazz Educator Award and two Citations of Excellence for outstanding contribution to bands and band music. Mr. Boyd has served as a clinician for several all-county bands, both concert and jazz. He has also enjoyed the opportunity to work at numerous colleges as a clinician for summer camps and honor bands, including Florida State University, the University of North Florida, the University of Central Florida, Florida Southern College, and Austin Peay University. Mr. Boyd is an active member of the National Band Association, the Florida Bandmasters Association, and the Florida Music Education Association.
In addition to his music education activities, Mr. Boyd performs on Trumpet with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and the Southern Winds Concert Band. Mr. Boyd has been married to his lovely wife, Jennifer, for the past seventeen years. Together, they have three beautiful children: Garrett, Emma, and Tyler.

Associate Director of Bands - Garth Steger & Colin Urbina

Mr. Steger is an Associate Band Director at West Orange High School where he is in charge of the percussion program, guitar program, and oversees the colorguard. He received his Bachelors in Music Performance with a specialization in percussion at the University of Central Florida under the instruction of Dean Moore and his Master of Arts in Music Performance at Indiana University of Pennsylvania under Dr. Michael Kingan. Before accepting his position at West Orange, Mr. Steger had been a music instructor and professional performer in Central Florida for nearly 10 years where he taught as an Adjunct professor at Rollins College, worked with successful high school programs such as Cypress Creek and Winter Park High School, and formed his own teaching studio. Mr. Steger served as the Director of Bands, Drumline, and Photography programs at Bishop Verot High School for 3 years. He performed with Orchestras including the Bach Festival Orchestra, Brevard Symphony Orchestra, the Villages Orchestra, the Florida Lakes Symphony Orchestra, the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Disney Candlelight Orchestra. He has also performed with the Florida Wind Band, Central Florida Brass Band and is a section member in the Southern Winds. Mr. Steger regularly composes music for the marching arts, solo percussion literature and percussion ensemble. He clinics high school groups regularly and is the percussion coordinator for the 11th-12th grade all state and all county bands.

​Colin Urbina is a music educator, saxophonist, and conductor based in Central Florida. He currently serves as the Associate Director of Bands at West Orange High School, where he directs concert bands, jazz ensembles, and the Warrior Marching Band.
A graduate of the University of Central Florida, Colin earned his Bachelor of Music in Music Education in 2024. During his time at UCF, he performed with many of the university's top groups, including the Wind Ensemble and Flying Horse Big Band while studying instrumental music education under the nationally respected UCF Bands faculty. He also served as the President of NAfME Collegiate from 2022-2023, and is currently an active member of FBA, NAfME, and FMEA. 
Prior to joining the faculty at West Orange High School, Colin served as Associate Director of Bands and Director of Orchestras at Hamlin Middle School in Orange County, where he developed concert bands and string orchestras while fostering a culture of musical excellence, collaboration, and student growth.
As an active performer, Colin continues to perform throughout Central Florida as a saxophonist in chamber ensembles, jazz groups, and community performances, including his own saxophone quartet, The M120 Project.
Colin is honored to be a member of the West Orange High School Band family and is grateful for the opportunity to work alongside outstanding students, dedicated colleagues, and a community supportive of continuing the tradition of excellence that defines the Warrior Band.
